Many of you reported sick fish this past spring. We noticed an increase of fish disease the week after Easter. Why? We can only guess that it was the extreme fluctuation of weather that occurred over the Easter weekend coupled with the usual stresses of spring spawning. Here are some steps you can take for ailing fish:
Do a partial water change of no more than 25% of the pond volume. This will dilute any toxins, parasites, bacteria, fungus, etc., in the water.
Test your water for Ammonia and Nitrites. Ammonia and nitrites come from fish waste or any decaying organic material. Even low levels are uncomfortable for fish and high levels will be fatal. Bring a water sample in and we will test it or purchase a simple test kit to have on hand.
Remember to dechlorinate with AquaSafe when replacing the pond water. AquaSafe not only dechlorinates but has conditioners to help ease the stress.
Treat with KoiVital Don't be fooled by the name - Goldfish benefit from KoiVital as well. KoiVital gives your fish the extra vitamins and minerals to fight off infection. It's like giving them a B-12 shot!
Treat with the proper Rx. • DesaFin, Parasite Guard & Anchors Away treat parasites • Fungus Eliminator is the best overall treatment for bacterial and fungal diseases.
Use Water Garden Starter to improve your water quality.
In a pinch you can always add rock salt or pond salt. Just don't use an iodized salt, and use 1 lb per 100 gallons of water.
